Grape Seed Extract

• Coronary heart disease (CHD) and atherosclerosis have been linked to theconsumption of saturated fat and cholesterol.However, World Health Organizationdata have shown that in certain regions of France, where the population consumeshigh levels of saturated fat, and where serum cholesterol levels and other risk factors are similarly high, deaths from CHD are significantly lower than in the US. This so called French Paradox has spurred much scientific investigation. The only dietary factor that showed a significant inverse correlation with CHD was consumption of red wine (Non Muslim jer tau !!..heheheh)

• The cardio-protective effect of red wine has been attributed to a group ofbioflavonoid compounds4 called proanthocyanidins. Other names for thesephytochemicals include flavonols, catechins, tannins and oligomeric procyanidins(OPC) to name only a few.

• Proanthocyanidins are concentrated in the seeds of the grape. These compounds areincorporated into red wine during the fermentation process when the must (crushedgrapes, seeds, stems, skin and juice) are held in vats for several weeks.

• The bioflavonoids in red wine and in Grape Seed Extract comprise a complex mixturecomposed of two monomer (or single unit) compounds, named catechin andepicatechin, and various polymeric products of these two compounds.5 Products with2 to 7 monomer units are often referred to as oligomers. When more than 7monomers are joined they are called polymers. Another phenolic compound, gallicacid, can form a special link called a gallate with the monomers, oligomers orpolymers.

• In vitro (laboratory) studies on catechin, epicatechin and the grape bioflavonoidshave shown them to be free radical scavengers that may be several times more potentthan the antioxidant vitamins C and E.6,7,8 These compounds effectively inhibitoxidation of human low-density lipoproteins (LDL)• Human studies with red and white wine have confirmed that some phenoliccompounds in red wine are absorbed into the blood, and become associated withLDL. These phenolic compounds then reduce the susceptibility of the LDL peroxidation

• Additional in vivo studies with rats fed catechin, grape seed phenolic monomers, orgrape seed polymers showed that the longer chain polymers are not absorbed in theintestine, while the monomers (and some of the oligomers) are absorbed. Grape seed extract suggests that these smaller compounds are responsible for the inhibition of LDL peroxidation in blood plasma. However, the longer chain and polymeric compounds may reduce plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol levels,and increase HDL levels.These effects may occur through an inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption.

• Grape Seed Extract has also been shown to be anti-inflammatory to inducevasodilatation,and enhance capillary strength.
